Paleontologist Charles Wilder travels to the island to help identify some unusual tracks found by a local guide. The tracks turn out to be fresh, not fossils. And when a plane crash leaves him lost and struggling to survive, he quickly discovers that freezing to death isn’t the only way to die.

He was supposed to get back home for his anxiously awaiting daughter. He assured her it would be a simple two-day trip. It doesn’t turn out that way.

Whenever I do a review on a book there are a few things that need to tick my "Yeh that book was awesome" boxes....one is is how the story flowed, how characters worked in it, & my favourite one, how it made me feel.
The story reminded me of a coiled spring that just got tighter and tighter, with the main character Charles Wilder in the thick of tragedy, a quest to find himself, and then ultimately survival. A single chapter sets the base for a great book, with action aplenty.
There were times I wanted to read faster to turn the page, so yes it held me, and yes at times my heart was in my mouth, and yes Charles was a great character.
The Authors descriptive style of writing really blew me away & at times I almost felt I was there, so my hat is off to you Will for an amazing adventure that was crazy, amazing and heart stopping all at the same time.
I can't wait for the next one.

Sole Prey A Survival Thriller Prequel Novella Extinction Crisis Book 0 eBook William Oday Reviews

William Oday's Manhunter is a good, ole, nail nibbling page turner! I'm usually the cozy mystery type, but I loved this smart, well written thriller.
I'm a fan, can't wait for more.
I am enjoying this series.
Wasn't what I expected when I first started reading. But I was surprised has i got into the story enjoyed
WOW...This book was a complete surprise, and just became one of my favorites. Loved the action, suspense, and edge of the seat drama. Can't wait to read the next one. The outdoor setting, and descriptions made this story come to life. Would love to see this as a movie. Leaves you wanting more, ASAP!
What would you do if you were alone on an island with a creature out of a nightmare? This is the premise for Maneater. It's a story of man against nature and what a story. Charles Wilder is a paleontologist invited to help identify some unusual tracks found in a remote region of Kodiak Island, Alaska. Trapped on the island as the result of a plane crash, he finds himself alone with a pocketknife, a bag of chips, and a few other odds and ends. Oh, yes. And one creature that would like to have him for a snack. If you enjoy "hair-raising adventures," set aside a couple of hours and enjoy this novella. If you decide to read it at night, definitely keep the lights on.
That is what you’re thinking after reading Oday’s new novella, Man-Eater. As in his previous publications, Oday does an excellent job of describing the surroundings, the characters, and the creatures of Man-Eater. The story is based in Alaska…from what he describes, you can envision the landscape like a travel brochure…and the people…the characters have very close relationship ties, establishing history so the reader can “feel” for them…and the foe, an extinct short-nosed bear. I thought at first he was over-playing the size of the beast, and Googled it. But sure enough, as big as he describes, and as fierce as Oday’s mind can conjure…which is pretty gruesome (just take a gander at his Last Peak Series for more gruesome Oday!!!!). The survival description throughout the story winds you up, but then leaves you with expectations for the rest of the story…because this is only a short book…something to entice, something to lure the reader back for another sample of Oday.
This book is not in my usual genre but I had picked up the short story prequel and book 1 in the series, so I figured I needed to read this one for the next one to really make sense for me. I'm glad I did. It was a really good read. I know a couple of reviews have stated that it was too far-fetched, but the basic idea that the protagonist is going to Alaska to look at some "really unusual tracks" should give you a clue that this is not going to be a nonfiction book. Now, I will agree that it does push some boundaries (Charles manages to escape from the "bear" when well-armed military men were unable to do so, and a few other incidents that I won't talk about because it will give away too much). That being said, I definitely like the way Mr Oday writes and I look forward to getting started on Sole Survivor. Oh, and so you don't think everything was sunshine and roses with this read, I did have one issue. I wish I had known it was previously published under the title Man-Eater. I already had that one in my library and wouldn't have bought this copy. But it's a good investment...)
