Dani and Ryker had a wonderful relationship but it fell apart. I was immediately interested by the reaction that Dani had to Ryker being back. It set the tone for the entire book. I did feel that Ryker and his parents did something that didn't seem true given that Dani had known his parents for a number of years, having grown up with Ryker. Wouldn't they have known that Dani wasn't the type of person to do things which Samantha said she did? So that was a bit puzzling. Then to not tell Ryker about the pictures Dani sent...well, that was just cruel. In the beginning, some of the story felt forced so there would be drama, but once I got past that, I found myself immersed in the storyline and I fell in love with Ryker and Dani as a couple. I loved the ending. That set the stage for me wanting to read the rest of this series. It also made me want to read more books from this author unconnected to this series. The author has a way of bringing reality to a story while still creating memorable characters intermixed with drama, intrigue and love.
I had a difficult time finishing it. Their were too many errors in using the correct tense, punctuation, and using the wrong spelling of a word. (Are for our etc.)
I also had a hard time believing that Ryker wouldn't be more upset at his parents not telling him he had twins that they knew about for 7 years. Dani was just way too nice about being abandoned for 8 years also. It was all very unrealistic. Ţhis did not read like an MC book either.
I realize this is a pretty new author but she could use some beta readers to help her out. I'm sorry but I don't think I'll be able to read the rest of the series.
I finished this book, so it gets 2 stars.
So much about this didn't work for me. The dialog was stilted in some places and there were mistakes that should have been caught in editing. There were extra/unnecessary commas; there was incorrect word placement; and at one point, the word "there" was used instead of "they're."
I could work past all of that if the story really wowed me. It was so slow moving and lackluster. Dani was so forgiving and laid back about Ryker leaving her with no word. (PS I'm very pissed Ryker never tried to find Dani. I'm also pissed that in eight years his parents never told him what they did!) The kids were also very accepting this strange man was their daddy. According to Dani they never asked questions about their dad so it's strange to me how accepting they were. Ryker went downhill in my view when he says he continued to sleep with his ex after she lied about him getting her pregnant. Was he not concerned she would get pregnant again?!
Next Ryker mentioned early on ow he still had feelings for Dani. She basically said they should focus on the kids. Do they get back together after a period of wooing, dates, and late-night talks? No, Ryker joins Dani in her shower. They have sex and are together again.
The final straw for my enjoyment of this book was that the conflict had no build up and was over just as quickly. It happens at about the 72% mark so it really came out of no where. It's unfortunate, because there was opportunity to hint at the conflict. The resolution of the conflict happens off page! We stay with Dani and Ryker's out taking care of the problem.
Read this book if you want. I doubt I'll read the next book of this series. It's about Dani's cousin Chase and he didn't come off as someone I'm interested in. (Another PS Chase was a little too excited for me at the fact that Dani was stopping one night. I'm pretty progressive, but stripping involves dancer's being sexually enticing. It's weird af that Chase was exited to see Dani that night. Ryker pointed it out, but we're supposed to act like it's ok.)
18 year old Dani is deserted by Ryker when he joins the military without a word to her. a jump ahead 8 years and Dani moved to be with family and built a life on her own..a strong loving and compassionate woman.
Ryker joined the military and basically has been a douche for 8 years. Self absorbed, stupid and a manwhore.
The story is about forgiveness , which in my mind I don’t see how Dani could be so forgiving, especially when Ryker never does much to deserve it..obvious as to who is stronger, intelligent and worthwhile person of the two.
The beginning of a series the secondary characters are funny, interesting and stories ai’m looking forward to listening to.
Narrators did an good job, sometimes would like al bigger variation of the emotions by McAllister..Laurel did very well with her characters.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This is not a MC book. If that's what you're looking for, you'll be disappointed. It's a second chance romance. Now, is it a good romance story? Not really. For as tough as her inner monologues are, there's not even a moments hesitation letting her ex back in her life and her home! His reason for leaving her with absolutely no discussion right after planning their future, and discovering she's pregnant with his twins, is not really answered. Also, how are they planning a future if he's sleeping with someone else? Don't even get me started on his mothers behavior. No way would her own mother be laughing and welcoming to this woman who called her daughter a whore and withheld info about the grandchildren. Seriously, I could go chapter by chapter poking holes. Just don't bother.
Great book!
I can't wait to see what is next; great new series for me to read!!
