Although billed as a student/teacher romance, Heartless would be just as good if Sam wasn't a teacher. The story around the relationship is strong enough to carry the book without the taboo tag line.Charlie is a great character. She's a spitfire, not taking crap from anyone and she will zap you with her quick wit in a second. The lines were good, not cheesy like Vanessa Marie was trying too hard. Charlie and her dad move around a lot, he is in the Marines and has to relocate often. This last move is the best for Charlie, she is back in her hometown with her best friend Jules and his mother Callie.
Jules and Charlie were just about born at the same time so they consider each other family. He is another strong character and is a close second to my favorite, Charlie. Jules is a bit of the protector of his "cousin" knowing that she hasn't had the easiest life and sometimes reacts to quickly. He has problems of his own, which we explore right along side of Charlies.
Sam was also a great character. He is on winter break from teaching his creative writing class at the high school. Sam sees Charlie at the coffee shop and is instantly intrigued in the girl that hops off of a Ducati. I liked that Sam wasn't a cocky ass with how good looking he sounds. He was nervous to talk to Charlie and didn't think she would give him the time of day. Sam was also a patient guy and dealt well with Charlie when things got tough.
Charlie is a sick girl and that is why she keeps people at bay. She has no idea what is going to happen to her day by day and doesn't want that life for anybody else, so she shuts Sam out. With the help of Jules and Sarah, another strong character, Charlie learns to live and love.
This book is well written and has great character development. It also seems like the story has more too it, Charlie's grandparents left her a trust we don't hear much more about and Julian's got something juicy going on as well. I am looking forward to the next book.

Heartless The Chasing Hearts Series Book 1 edition by Vanessa Marie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
First off, what an amazing story. It was full of every kind of emotion- I laughed at the sarcastic remarks and playful banter between characters. I cried. My palms got clammy during a certain hospital scene. For a first time author, Vanessa knocked this one out of the park. I can't wait to read the rest of this series because I fell in love with Sam and Charlie. I really hope they get their happily ever after, because they deserve it. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You won't be sorry!!
Wonderful read full of heart and lots of sass. The relationship between Charlie and Jules is a great mix of brotherly and best friend. A great friend who pushes Charlie out of her comfort zone over and over again.
Charlie and Sam are beautiful together. The student / teacher romance created the perfect amount of angst to keep you on your toes. Throw in the trials that Charlie has gone through and you've got the perfect tear jerker romance.
I really enjoyed this one!
This is a student/teacher story. Charlie has been through so much in her short life. Her family is close but she will not let anyone else in for fear of being hurt. Her family moved to South Carolina. She meets Sam in a coffee shop and the sparks fly. Charlie is happy for a while then things change and she breaks up with Sam. But Sam will not allow it. This is a sweet, funny and heartbreaking story. I really liked this book and will definitely be reading the next book in the series.
Heartless is the first installment of the Chasing Hearts Series.
This book was recommended by a friend and it doesn't disappoint. Heartless was surprisingly refreshing. The Story is very well written and well balanced. I cant wait for the #2 of the series.
Charlie is not your typical senior in high-school. She has had a difficult life from constant moving and never have a place feel like home, never knowing her mother, to suffering from medical problems that may cost her her life. Charlie has a close knit family, but wont let anyone else in. When she moves back to her hometown she meets Sam and everything just feel right. The story, however, has different ideas.
The story will have you laugh out loud, pull at your heartstrings, and remind you life's not easy but to make the best of it!
I strongly recommend this book. I am looking forward to see more of this author.
SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW
I am glad I stayed up too late reading this book. It was a good story and the main and supporting characters were likable. No one was mean. The main characters were in love with each other and when not afraid, it showed in their actions. The H was not a manhoe and the h was not a virgin. It is very refreshing. Also when the characters made love, although it did not occur often, it was hot. While it is a student/teacher romance, the h was 19 and mature for her age and the H was 24 years old. This is not a molestation story. The smex part of the relationship occurred before either knew that that they would be teacher student and happened rarely after they knew. Also the H graduated the year she started school there. The editor did a good job as there were no noticeable grammar mistakes.
What do I wish was different? While I understood why the h fought their relationship starting half way through the book, she wasted too much time pushing him away, making their separation occur for too long. Among other things, it made the book drag in parts and wasted their time together. Also I would prefer a different ending. The majority of the time I prefer a HEA ending and this is one of them. At times, reality sucks and from reading the blurb about the author she can attest to that. In addition, although I know it is not PC, I would have loved the hero show some jealousy and possessiveness towards her. There were plenty of opportunities for both to be possessive and jealous and it did not happened. I would say it was because they were secure in their relationship but as stated above, she pushed him away for long period of time and he thought they were finished. I believe it would have added more passion to their story. With that said the author did a good job and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
