A Promise by Daylight Hqn Alison DeLaine 9780373778942 Books Reviews

I will read an Alison DeLaine again. The Duke of Winston has a epiphany after a near fatal accident. Millicent Germain want to become a physician and applies to the Duke as his personal medic, only she applies as Miles Germain. Their days are filled with heated debate and the nights with sexual tension. Steamy Romance, Strong Personalities, and Sharp witticism makes for an outstanding debut. I will enjoy the next novel by this author
I am enthralled by Alison DeLaine's fresh and vivid style of storytelling. From the very first page, her writing draws me right in to this fascinating and fun story.
In the Georgian era, Millicent (Millie) Germain is a medic, in a time when women were not educated for any professions. Serving as physician and governess on the pirate Katherine’s ship in A Gentleman ‘Til Midnight, Millie’s greatest dream is to attend a prestigious surgical school in Malta. However, she is constantly thwarted in her efforts to reach her goal.
Disguised as Miles Germain and employed by the debauched and recovering Duke of Winston in Paris, Millie’s dream is within reach as the duke plans to sail to Greece. Her plan is to save the money the duke pays her and use it for her studies. But she doesn’t know that the duke’s accident has granted him an epiphany on his dissolute life, one that takes him home to his estate in England, the very last place Millie wants to go.
Of course, he knows she’s a woman but decides to play along with her game as he is attracted to her knowledge, femininity, and innocence. And the more he learns about her, the more he is drawn to her and admires her ambitions.
Winston uses debauchery as a distraction from the pain and guilt of his past. He holds a secret that he feels he must atone for but he doesn’t know if he’s strong enough to do it. So he returns to his ancestral home to keep the temptation of those distractions—such as drinking buddies and courtesans—away.
Despite the serious tone of the novel, Millie’s conversations with Winston’s butler and valet provide some hilarious comic relief as they try to get Winston back to his libertine ways, the butler and valet so they can have some of the action and Millicent so that she can finally go to Greece. But with every encounter with the duke, Millie is falling for him.
“All the while he was trying to live a more moral life, she was slipping into a sensual quicksand.” (p190)
Winston admires Millie’s intelligence and ambition and his thoughtful gift is a breathtaking and romantic moment long before they become lovers.
Millicent hides terrible secrets of her own and is willing to go through life as a man, Miles Germain, to become a physician.
Their love story is passionate and very sexy, searing in its intensity, as each comes to realize what the other means to them.
A hopeful, lovely, and sensual romance.
*I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why in the hell would something that is clearly a series not be labelled as one… Yes, A Promise by Daylight is the third book in a series, but since there is no indication of that, I ended up reading it first, when I even have the other two to read… This is particularly bad considering this is a series where continuity matters. I honestly cannot understand the logic in this, but be forewarned that the correct reading order of this series (let’s call it Women of the Seven Seas) is as follows
1. A Gentleman 'Til Midnight
2. A Wedding by Dawn
3. A Promise by Daylight

Now that you’ve been warned, I must say I really liked this story (I would’ve probably liked it even more if I had read the previous books first…). In the beginning we meet Miss Millicent Germain pretending to be Mr. Miles Germain and presenting herself as the new personal doctor of the Duke of Winston. Millie always wanted to study medicine but that was, at the time, a career prohibited to women. During the years she spent aboard the ship of her friend Katherine (the protagonist of the first book) her gender was never an issue, but in dried land she has no other option but to pretend to be a man...

Winston is a rakish Duke convalescing from a terrible accident. He was simply walking on a street of Paris when a wall collapsed on him and another man. Winston was badly injured but the other man wasn’t so lucky… The reason why Millie is hired is because Winston is planning to travel to Greece, but the accident has made him rethink his life, his mistakes (mainly one from his youth) and the advices of his best friend, and he decides to return to England, abandon his roguish ways and finally begin to fulfill the duties adjacent to his title.

But Millie needs him to go to Greece for that is the only way for her to achieve her dream study at the surgeon's school in Malta. And that is how, having begun by censuring his way of life, Millie ends up not only promoting it, but also creating situations that will make him rethink his decision.

Millie’s disguise fools everyone except Winston who discerns her female characteristics since the first time she examines him. However Winston decides to keep up the charade, amusing himself at her expense. The problem is that, despite her manly clothes and wig, he’s unbelievably attracted to Millie. Certainly the only possible explanation must reside on the fact that he has forsaken all worldly pleasures, right?

Millie is also inexplicably attracted to Winston, but she cannot afford the distraction. During the previous books she has managed to alienate herself from all her friends and her only hope for a future is to go to Malta. Or is it?

As they eventually give in to the attraction and begin to get to know each other better, they realise appearances can be deceiving and that there is more to them than it seemed at first. And that, in life, being too extreme never really works. But will they be able to find a middle term that they can both live with?

After all, they both have an enormous amount of guilt on their shoulders making them believe they are unworthy of happiness… And in Millie’s case there is a reference to a past violent event regarding her that may shock, so be forewarned.

As I already mentioned, I liked the story and the romance between Winston and Millie. But I think I liked even better the scenes where the both of them interact with Winston’s childhood friends and those of Millie with Winston’s servants who treat her like one of the boys. Hilarious!

I’m going to read the first books in the series (considering I already have them and all…), but I’m really sorry I didn’t read them in order… Now I already know all the important things that are going to happen in them...
Loved It!
I haven't read a romance novel in at least 25 years; I'm so glad it was Alison's book I read. Very well written!
The story was great, the love scenes were steamy enough sexual tension to pull you a long. I enjoyed both the h/h struggle with themselves and each other. it's my first story from this author and I'm interested in reading more.
Not up to her standard. It was a well thought out story line but the book seemed to lack some action and flow. Not sure what others will think of it as this is only my own opinion. The shame is the story line itself was very well thought out. It just lacks some life.
A wonderful read. The story line was unique and full of anticipation.the main characters were well suited and it really made me hope that the hero would change and rescue the heroine . I really think she deserve that and in the pass book she didn't deserve the punishment that was meted out. Well written and was worth the wait.
