The Golden Ghost, by Marion Dane Bauer is a light, fast paced book for younger readers. It is about a young girl and her friend Todd who are enjoying the last final days of summer before beginning fourth grade. One afternoon, Delsie dares her friend to go explore the abandoned houses close to the old mill. They sneak inside one of the houses to investigate and learn someone has been staying there. Delsie senses a presence of some kind, but isn't sure what it is. They quickly return home, but Delsie continues to wonder about the mysterious feeling. One evening, Delsie sees a strange customer with a sparkling, golden image behind him leaving her father's grocery store and decides to follow him. The next few chapters quickly reveal what the golden image is and how it is connected to the stranger. It ends with a happy ending and Delsie finally getting something she has always wanted.

I think this book would be great for younger readers who are just beginning chapter books. The text is large and easy to read, with an occasional illustration every few pages to support the text. The language is simple and not too complicated for younger readers. The elements of the story (character, setting and plot) are not deeply developed and I longed for more information in some places. However, a young reader will still be able to make connections and comprehend the storyline. The quick pace and sense of mystery will keep their attention.
