The novel's strength is its complex, realistic characters, especially Poppy Sinclair, the 16-year-old protagonist. Poppy is a typical teen in many ways, with all the usual anxieties and preoccupations: school, boys, friends, family. But with some extra stresses: her parents' divorce; a new stepfather; a near-drowning experience a year ago that she hasn't shaken off; and above all the fact that she has fallen in love with her best friend and can't tell him, for fear of losing him.

Poppy is inquisitive, caring, stubborn, and passionate -- qualities that pull her into investigating the mystery of a girl's murder, and then a related murder. She has plenty of gumption and will stand up even to the police when she thinks they are wrong. But she's no tinplate hero, suffering her full share of terror and panic when events turn deadly.

Jones skilfully builds both the murder plot and the suspense. As the story moves towards its climax, the pace and mood ratchet up. The setting of the festival by the lake, at first so lively and colourful, becomes subtly threatening.

This is also (perhaps) a paranormal mystery, but Jones handles these elements with a light hand, so they give an extra shading of unease and menace, without saturating the plot. As for whodunit: experienced mystery buffs may think they've got the solution nailed down, but there's a final twist that will take most by surprise.
