Every Last Kiss The Bloodstone Saga Courtney Cole Books

Macy is a 17-year-old girl dealing with a cheating boyfriend. Normally, she’s this laid back girl who takes everything in stride. This, however, is not something she’s keen on and his things take the brunt of it. On the day she delivers his worse-for-wear stuff back to him, she gets bloodstone necklace on her doorstep.

This necklace begins her adventure.

She’s Macy in modern times, Charmain in ancient Egyptian times. Best friend to Cleopatra herself. Only Charmain knows what’s going to happen to everyone, and it’s her job to make sure that it happens that way. She can’t deviate from the plans of the fates. This even means knowing how her soulmate dies and not raising a finger to save his life.

We have a whole host of characters in this story, from modern days of Macy, Jen and Jessa (the Gray twins), Derek the cheater and his woman Tara, Jade, and Gavin. And from ancient times, Marc Antony, Cleopatra, Iras, Annen, Ahmose, Tehran, Pothinus, Hasani, and Charmain. Many of these characters are repeats of others, from one life to the next, but I’ll let you discover who’s who.

This is an interesting book. I found myself trying to compare it to Nocte and Verum. I will readily tell you that it doesn’t have that punch at all. And if I were to compare the two this would come up lacking. But these are such vastly different stories and their narrative is so unique onto themselves that there are no parallels that can be made. So, if you were introduced to Ms. Cole by her Nocte Series, please take into account that these are wildly different and do not hold this book to that book for comparison. That does this book and story a grave injustice.

Ms. Cole writes a tale that touches on the modern time, but the back story given seems to set the stage for the rest of the series. I haven’t read them yet, but they are definitely on my TBR list. I’m really curious about several facts we’ve been teased with, knowing that they are only partial facts and not complete truths. I dare say Ms. Cole is quite proficient at the hook. And if this series delivers like her Nocte Series (of which I have no doubts!), she’s just as proficient at the delivery as well. So would I recommend this book? Yes I would! I would remind those that have read her Nocte Series to forget them when they read these because it might colour their judgement like it started to do mine.

Every Last Kiss The Bloodstone Saga Courtney Cole Books Reviews

Sometimes freebies pay off, and this one definitely did. Even though this is a preview to Courtney Cole's Bloodstone Saga, it isn't lacking in anything. Absolutely nothing.

Cole begins her tale where a lot of YA novels start. Macy is a typical teenager. She has a boyfriend who has broken her heart and she has a best friend who gives her love and support. That is pretty much where the similarities end. She soon finds out that nothing is as it seems and she has lived several lives before this one. The journey that she eventually takes is amazing.

Every Last Kiss is a combination of fantasy and historical YA fiction. When Macy gets sent back in time to the life that she spent with Cleopatra as Charmian, you can't help but get swept up in the story right along with her. The imagery and emotion that is created just draws you in.

The story weaves and turns and keeps you turning pages just to see exactly what the mystery is behind Macy/Charmian and the power that surrounds her. It took me a while to read this one, but it wasn't because it was a slow read. I'm not sure why because the descriptions and action were flowing. A lot happened in Every Last Kiss and by the end there were some secrets revealed, but still a lot to learn. It took me by surprise when I found myself in tears near the end. Macy/Charmian was a very easy character to sympathize with and you almost felt as if you even knew Cleopatra a little better by the time you were finished. It gave her a human side, even though it was fiction, that will never have me look at that point in history exactly the same way.

Needless to say, I will be checking out the rest of this series. Cole's writing style is very easy to read and get emotionally vested in. Well worth the read.
I won't go into the specifics of the story (since that has already been done) However, I will be honest and confess that stories of ancient Egypt hold a special fascination for me. The writer included many interesting details about life in an ancient egyptian palace, such as the make up and perfumed oils used by Cleopatra and her handmaids, their clothes and jewelry. The palace is richly described, and I loved reading about the expansive marble floors, massive statues and lush gardens, opulent furnishings, scented air and use of incense, all providing a luxurious backdrop to the story and creating the right atmosphere.
The author used some well known facts about the life of Cleopatra (specifically, the last few weeks) and wove a tale of fated lovers, passions that would last through lifetimes and somehow included magic, time travel and links to ancient myths.
The only aspect of the story that was a constant wrong note for me, was the dialogue. There were too many instances when modern words and phrases were used, for example "alright" and "ok" and "are you set?". I just couldn't imagine Cleopatra (or any people of that era) saying those things and each time, it jolted me out of the story a little.
Given the age of the egyptian protagonists (in their 30's) the romantic aspects of the story did seem a little "teen romance" at times but I forgave that intensity due to the "we will die soon", problem..
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, enough to give it four stars and would definitely recommend it as a light, relaxing read for vacation or holiday time.
