I absolutely love this story. Here's the Wiki summary:
The plot is based around the ancient Flawse family, landed gentry based at the falling-down Flawse Hall, (near "Flawse Fell") in the wilds of Northumberland, just south of the Anglo-Scottish border. The single remaining family member is a cantankerous octenegarian named Edwin Tyndale Flawse. His illegitimate grandson Lockhart (aka "the Bastard") combines sexual and educational innocence with an alarming propensity for violence when he or his wife is threatened. The old man was born in the late 19th century, and his main aim in the very autumn years of his life is to find the father of his bastard grandchild and flog him within an inch of his life.
I loved this book the first time I read it. And the second time. And when I decided that I wanted to read it a third time, I purchased a copy off Amazon. It was worth it. I enjoy his other books as well but this is my favorite. What a story!

The Throwback Tom Sharpe 9780099435525 Books Reviews

Guffaws galore
This book is probably the funniest piece of writing I've ever encountered. I literally laughed so hard I cried the first time I read it. Sharpe is a terrific writer of black comedy, and in my opinion (having read all his books) this is his best work. You will NOT be sorry with this purchase!
The adventures of Lockhart Flawse (The Bastard) as he is known to his Grandfather who is his sole family. Watch as he grows and matures, experiences life, love and loss.

One of Tom Sharpe's wittiest. i laughed out loud a few times, but mostly sniggered at Lockhart's exploits, his Grandfather's views on everything and Dodd Flawse Hall's jack-of-all-trades.

If you are new to Tom Sharpe, 'The Throwback' would be a good start to a life long love of this author. If you are an old friend ... enjoy.
accurate description, prompt delivery
Either you adore Tom Sharpe or you hate him. For one who adores his kind of black and bizarre humor, this is a winner. And the writer is beautifully articulate, and certainly knows how to turn a phrase. I have been a longtime admirer of Mr. Sharpe, and have read many of his novels. They never disappoint!
I laughed uproariously all through reading this book. Literally had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. BUT ... some folks to whom I recommended it said they didn't think it was that funny, or even funny at all. Why? Well if you read some of the professional reviews of the book that will give you a clue about why I say so. The book is about a guy's "evil" plots to get even for the theft of his inheritance. It's the dialog, attitudes, and accidental happenings regarding the main characters that is so preposterously ridiculous that made me laugh so hard. So, you'll have to pay your money and take your chances. My guess, however, is that if you're a true Monty Python lover (as in the dead parrot, the Black Knight - "None shall pass!," or the "I'd like to report a burglary" funny voices skits) then you, too, will howl with laughter at this raucous book.
My first reading of The Throwback some 40 years ago had me laughing out load, so much so that tears streamed down my cheeks and was rendered speechless much to the consternation of other flight crew members in the Pilots’ Lounge in some airport. Reading it again 40 years later in the local doctor’s waiting room in the French village where I live changed nothing but the appalled looks of concerned French villagers for a demented Englishman crying out laughing uproariously at his electronic book as tears flowed down his cheeks.

This book should carry a warning as to where it should be read. Only a tax inspector would not find it hilarious. Let your imagination run riot as Tom Sharpe intended.
